Global Village teams bring invaluable support to the communities they visit. Their concentrated people power and enthusiasm give homeowners a real boost. More homes are built each year because of the donation Global Village teams make to the hosting Habitat affiliates. Volunteers do not need prior building experience. If you have a sense of adventure, are in good health and willing to work hard, you can be part of a Global Village team. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or be part of an organized school, faith or service group.

 

A Life Changing Experience

A Global Village trip can be a life changing experience. It's an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of development issues, to learn more about another culture and about yourself.  You will be more than a tourist. You will be welcomed into the community by your hosts and introduced to the local culture as a guest. You will work and laugh together, share stories, and make friends. As you let go of many of the comforts of home you start to focus on things that really matter.

Global Village Facts

Travel with a Purpose

  • The Global Village volunteer program consists of short-term house-building trips designed to give concerned people the opportunity to observe and contribute to Habitat for Humanity's work first hand.
  • Teams of eight to twenty volunteers spend a week or more building houses in partnership with families in need of a simple, decent place to live.
  • Each team is led by experienced volunteers who are trained and supported by the Global Village staff.
  • There is no language requirement to travel on a GV trip. The host GV staff will arrange for an interpreter if needed.
  • Every trip is different and each team member can expect to gain a unique set of experiences and memories. Itineraries are balanced with plenty of work, rest and free time.
  • Most teams spend a few days - depending on the length of the trip - touring local historic sites and attractions or participating in cultural activities. Visits to national parks or ancient ruins, hiking, horseback riding or bike touring can be part of the Global Village experience.

 

An Invaluable Experience

  • GV trip costs depend on the country visited, the Habitat host affiliate and the number of days. All trip costs include room and board, in-country transportation, travel insurance and a donation to Habitat for Humanity toward the host community's building projects and the Global Village program.
  • Trips cost approximately $1,200 - $2000 (not including airfare) depending on destination and length.
  • Airfare, cancellation and baggage insurance are not included in the cost.
  • Charitable donation receipts will be issued for all eligible trip contributions.

 

Fundraising

  • Fundraising is a great way to involve more people in your project and share your excitement about helping a family to build a home and a better life for themselves and their children.
  • The awareness you create may eventually result in more homes for more families.
  • We will guide you through the process of receiving, recording and submitting the donations.

Habitat homes in tropical countries are often made of concrete brick or block. The team will work with the homeowners and trained construction supervisors. The work often includes digging, mixing concrete, carrying and laying bricks.

Volunteer Leaders

Team leaders are dedicated volunteers who are responsible for planning and implementing the trips with the help of the GV staff, both here in Canada and in the host country. They are experienced travelers with leadership skills who have been selected and trained by the GV staff. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a team leader.
